Ligonde to Palas de Rei

Day 4 completo! 13kms today. Very nearly half way through our Camino!

This morning started bright and (very) early with some excitement in Grant and my room… I awoke just after 5:00 to the sound of drip..drip…drip. Flung the window open to investigate and was met with a steady drizzle AND a HEDGEHOG strutting its stuff before my very eyes! The excitement was real…. My first ever real live hedgehog! So of course I did the decent thing and woke Grant up to take a look, much to his disgust/delight (it was hard to tell, he sort of grunted at the little ‘hog and went back to bed)

Our taxi arrived at 8:00 to take us back to the cafe we stopped at yesterday and it was rather intimidating to see all the hills we’d soon be climbing.  We had a quick cup of coffee at the cafe, before setting off in the misty drizzle to conquer those hills. The misty drizzle soon became more of a drizzle-drizzle and then actual rain and it wasn’t long before we were looking like a bunch of drowned rats, but on we plodded.

When we were walking past the hotel we’d started from this morning the consensus was to pop in for a coffee and to dry off as best we could. The general mood was much improved after that and we headed off again into the wet.

It was another day of woodland paths mixed with some sections on or near the main road. We passed some lovely old stone cottages and a number of “fixer-uppers” for Grant to buy me, but for some reason he doesn’t seem too keen.

It drizzled on and off for most of the morning with the first glimpse of sunshine coming while we were having lunch in Palas de Reís. We took a short wander around Palas de Reis, visited a church, took a peek in the Pilgrim shop (which the owner had left open and completely unattended!) and shopped for some snacks in the supermarket, before heading off for the last 4kms of today’s walk. .

Not long and we were at our lovely albergue La Pallota de San Cristobal where we have had such a lovely evening.

So far the feet are holding up well. I’ve had a bit of a cough (thankfully it seems to be on the mend today) and Heidi has come down with a nasty cold but we have well-stocked first aid kits so we are throwing ALL the meds at the bugs and hoping we’ll all be fit and raring to go in the morning.

(Noticed a strange thing today at both the cafe in Airexe and at our albergue, there are coins balanced on the stones all over the walls - turns out it’s a Galician tradition - you put a coin on the stone and make a wish, if the coin stays there your wish will come true)

Our accommodation tonight is at La Pallota de San Cristobal.  I highly recommend this albergue - our favourite albergue of our Camino.  The owner, Mario is such a congenial host and the facilities are fantastic.  The food was also excellent and we were given complimentary local liquers to enjoy after our meal.
